Shoulder pain can be frustrating and limiting, especially for those who lead an active lifestyle. Whether it’s caused by repetitive strain, injury, or underlying musculoskeletal issues, seeking professional osteopathic treatment can make a significant difference. In this case study, we’ll explore how osteopathy helped a 50-year-old strength trainer in Tunbridge Wells regain mobility and return to pain-free movement after experiencing acute shoulder pain.
Patient Background
Our patient, a 50-year-old individual with no significant medical history, regularly engages in strength training. Staying active is a core part of their routine, making the sudden onset of shoulder pain particularly disruptive.
Presenting Complaint
The patient came to us with acute shoulder pain that had persisted for two weeks. Their range of motion was significantly restricted, particularly in flexion, abduction, and external rotation.
This not only affected their workouts but also daily activities like getting dressed and lifting objects. With the inability to train effectively, they were keen to find a solution.
Assessment & Diagnosis
Through a thorough clinical examination, we identified the condition as Subacromial Pain Syndrome (SAPS). This diagnosis was confirmed by evaluating the patient’s medical history, conducting range of motion testing, palpating the affected tissues, and performing orthopedic tests. Interestingly, the patient had been misdiagnosed with frozen shoulder at A&E, but our assessment revealed a different underlying cause.
Osteopathic Treatment Plan
To relieve pain and restore function – This helped alleviate protective muscle spasms, allowing for improved movement.
- Dry Needling – This helped alleviate protective muscle spasms, allowing for improved movement.
- Shoulder Mobilisation – We gently worked on the shoulder joint to enhance range of motion.
- Soft Tissue Massage – Surrounding muscles were treated to reduce tension and support movement recovery.
A total of four sessions were recommended, along with specific home exercises tailored to the patient’s recovery stage.
Home Exercises & Self-Care Advice
To complement in-clinic treatments, we provided a structured home exercise plan:
- Mobility Exercises – Initially, to help restore movement and reduce stiffness.
- Strength Exercises – Gradually introduced to build resilience in the affected tissues and prevent future issues.
- Training Modifications – We advised the patient and their personal trainer on modifying exercises to avoid aggravating the shoulder while maintaining overall strength.
Treatment Outcomes & Recovery
After just the first session, the patient experienced a drastic improvement in shoulder mobility and pain reduction. Over the next few sessions, they regained strength and were able to resume daily activities with ease. By the final session, they were completely pain-free and had returned to their regular gym routine.
Follow-up & Prevention Strategies
To maintain long-term shoulder health, we advised the patient to:
- Continue strength training with progressive load adjustments.
- Ensure proper technique and form during exercises.
- Work with their personal trainer to adapt workouts if any discomfort arises.
