Client case study: Lower Back Pain and Muscle Spasms

Patient Name: John R.
Age: 50
Occupation: Construction Worker

Medical History: No significant prior medical history, occasional sports-related injuries.

John presented with complaints of sudden, severe lower back pain after lifting heavy
materials at work. He reported a sharp, stabbing pain in his lower back that radiated
down to his right leg. The pain was accompanied by stiffness and limited mobility,
significantly affecting his ability to perform daily tasks and work.

Clinical examination and history-taking revealed symptoms consistent with acute
lumbar strain, possibly involving irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, known as
sciatica.

A focused treatment plan was devised to address John’s acute lower back pain:

Osteopathy Sessions (Initial Visit and Follow-ups):

  • Initial assessment revealed muscle spasms, reduced range of motion, and
    tenderness in the lumbar region.
Osteopathic treatment aimed at reducing muscle tension, restoring proper
spinal alignment, and improving mobility in the affected area.

First Osteopathy Session (Day 1):

  • Following the initial osteopathy session, John reported a slight reduction
in pain and increased ease of movement.
The osteopath provided specific exercises and advice on proper posture
and body mechanics to prevent further strain.

Treatment Outcomes:

Follow-up Osteopathy Sessions (Days 3, 7, 14, and 21):

  • Following the initial osteopathy session, John reported a slight reduction
in pain and increased ease of movement.
The osteopath provided specific exercises and advice on proper posture
and body mechanics to prevent further strain.

Follow-up Osteopathy Sessions (Days 3, 7, 14 and 21):

  • Over the course of five sessions conducted weekly, John experienced
    gradual improvement in his symptoms.
Each session focused on addressing muscle tension, spinal alignment,
and providing manual therapy techniques to alleviate pain and promote
    healing.

Follow-up:

After completing the series of five osteopathy sessions, John reported being completely
free from lower back pain. His mobility and functionality had significantly improved,
allowing him to return to work without any discomfort. He continued to implement the
exercises and ergonomic recommendations provided during the sessions to maintain a
healthy spine and prevent future episodes of back pain.
